Install on macOS
njMule for macOS is an app for Macs with Apple silicon (arm64), on macOS 13 or later, shipped in a disk image. There is no build for Intel Macs; the Docker image is an alternative there.
Download
| File (njMule 0.3.1) | What it is |
|---|---|
njmule-0.3.1-macos-arm64.dmg | Disk image for Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later |
Older versions are on the GitHub releases page. You can check the download before you open it.
Install
- Open the disk image.
- Drag njMule onto the Applications folder beside it.
- Open njMule from Applications or Launchpad. The first time, macOS blocks it: see Open it the first time.
- At the first start, a wizard helps you set njMule up: see First start.
Besides the app, the disk image holds Uninstall njMule: keep the disk image if you may want it later (see Uninstall).
Open it the first time
The app is signed ad hoc but not notarized by Apple, so Gatekeeper refuses its first launch. Either:
-
open System Settings → Privacy & Security, find the message about njMule and choose Open Anyway; or
-
remove the quarantine attribute that the download put on it, in Terminal:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/njMule.app
After that, njMule opens as any other app. If the macOS firewall is on, allow njMule to accept incoming connections when asked, so that other clients can reach you.
Command line
The command line is inside the app:
/Applications/njMule.app/Contents/MacOS/njmule --help
It is njMule's engine itself, which the app's window, njmule-gui beside it, starts; without
options it runs headless. To type only njmule, link it into a folder of your PATH:
sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/bin
sudo ln -s /Applications/njMule.app/Contents/MacOS/njmule /usr/local/bin/njmule
See Command line.
ed2k links
The app declares the ed2k:// scheme to macOS, so the links you click in a browser open in njMule,
also when it is not running yet. See eD2K links.
Where your data goes
njMule keeps its settings, lists and unfinished downloads in
~/Library/Application Support/njMule, its caches in ~/Library/Caches/org.njmule.njMule and its
logs in ~/Library/Logs/njMule. Completed downloads go to ~/Downloads/njMule. See
Data locations.
Upgrade
njMule tells you when a new version is out, and can download it and replace the whole app for you (Restart to update), keeping the old one until the new one has started well: see Updates. You can also drag the app of a newer disk image onto Applications, replacing the old one; your settings and downloads stay where they are.
Uninstall
- Open the disk image again and open Uninstall njMule. It is signed the same way as the app, so it may need the same Open Anyway step.
- Leave the line Delete my njMule data: settings, server and contact lists, identity and credits, unfinished downloads and logs unselected to keep your data for a later installation, or select it to delete it too.
- Choose Uninstall.
If njMule is still running, it closes it first, once njMule has saved its state. It then turns Start njMule when I log in off, moves njMule to the Trash and, if you selected the line, the three folders of your data too. Your completed downloads always stay. See Uninstall.
