Files of the profile

This page lists the files njMule writes, folder by folder (see Where njMule keeps its data for where each folder is). Many of them use eMule's own formats, marked eMule below: they are the files the import from eMule takes over, and other eD2K clients understand them too. The others are njMule's own.

Stop njMule before you edit

njMule reads these files at start and writes them while it runs and when it exits. Edit or replace a file only while njMule is stopped (njmule --exit, or quit the desktop app), or your change will be overwritten.

The configuration folder

Settings

FileHoldsFormat
njmule.propertiesEvery preference of the engine, one key=value per line, sorted. A value that is not valid falls back to its default with a warning in the log; keys this version does not know are kept. It also holds the proxy and SMTP passwords as typed, so it is readable by its owner only on Linux and macOS, its backup njmule.properties.bak too.njMule
webui.propertiesThe web interface: on or off, port, other computers allowed, the password and guest password (as hashes only), the remote-control API, the host names and trusted proxies. Readable by its owner only on Linux and macOS.njMule
scheduler.propertiesThe rules of the scheduler.njMule
categories.propertiesThe download categories: name, incoming folder, tint, priority, file name patterns.njMule
addresses.datThe server.met addresses taken at each start when Auto-update server list at startup is on, one per line.eMule

Networks

FileHoldsFormat
server.metThe eD2K server list, with each server's priority, ping, limits and failures.eMule
staticservers.datThe static servers: host:port,priority,name per line.eMule
nodes.datThe Kad contacts heard from last, to start from next time.eMule
ipfilter.datThe IP filter, joined from its lists.eMule
key_index.dat, src_index.dat, load_index.datThe Kad index: keywords and sources other nodes published to you, and the load of the nodes of your keywords. Saved when Kad stops and every half hour, read back only as far as still alive.eMule
notes_index.datThe file comments and ratings other nodes published to you on Kad.njMule, in the format of src_index.dat

Identity

FileHoldsFormat
preferences.datYour user hash, which identifies you on eD2K, created at the first start. Readable by its owner only on Linux and macOS.eMule
cryptkey.datYour private key for secure identification, which proves the user hash is yours. Readable by its owner only on Linux and macOS.eMule
preferencesKad.datYour Kad ID.eMule
kadudpkey.datThe secret from which the keys of your Kad UDP obfuscation derive.njMule
clients.metThe credits of other clients, by user hash: what you uploaded to and downloaded from each, with their keys.eMule

Copy these together, or not at all: a user hash with another key fails every identification.

Files and downloads

FileHoldsFormat
known.metThe files you downloaded or share: hashes, upload priority and their request and transfer statistics.eMule
known2_64.metThe AICH hash sets of those files, used to repair and check parts. Rebuilt by hashing the files again if lost.eMule
shareddir.datThe shared folders, one per line.eMule
sharedtrees.datThe shared folders whose subfolders are shared too.njMule
cancelled.metThe files you cancelled, so that search results can mark them.eMule
fileinfo.iniYour comments and ratings of files.eMule
finished.jsonThe completed downloads still listed in the transfers, until Clear completed.njMule
deleted-downloads.txtThe links of downloads deleted by themselves for receiving nothing, to add them again.njMule

Messages and searches

FileHoldsFormat
emfriends.metYour friends.eMule
StoredSearches.metThe search tabs left open at exit, with their results.eMule
SearchSpam.metWhat you marked as spam in search results, and what the spam filter learnt from it.eMule

Statistics and history

FileHoldsFormat
statistics.propertiesThe totals of all sessions: bytes, sessions, time.njMule
clienthistory.jsonThe clients met in the last 90 days (at most 20,000): name, program, first and last meeting and, when countries are shown, the country. Never their address.njMule

Running njMule

FileHoldsFormat
njmule.lockHeld while njMule runs on this profile, so that a second one cannot start on it.njMule
handoffThe local port and a secret through which a second start hands its links (or --exit) to the njMule already running.njMule
api-tokenThe token of the remote-control API. Readable by its owner only on Linux and macOS.njMule
update.propertiesWhat njMule remembers of updates: the last check, the newest versions seen, the one you skipped, the one that last ran here.njMule
ed2k-handler-backup.reg (Windows), ed2k-handler-previous (Linux)The program that opened ed2k links before njMule took them, to give them back.njMule

Left by an import from eMule

File or folderHolds
import/A report of each import, 20261015-104000.txt for example: every file read from eMule with its size and SHA-256, and what became of it.
import-identity/eMule's identity, waiting for the next start (and for eMule to be closed) to take its place.
import-files/Imported lists that the running njMule would overwrite, waiting for the next start.
AC_ServerMetURLs.dat, AC_SearchStrings.datThe addresses and searches typed in eMule's boxes, offered again by njMule's.

The other folders

FolderFiles
guidesktop.json: the desktop window's options (start minimised, notification area, prompt on exit, watch the clipboard). .window-state.json and remote-window-state.json: the place and size of the window, on this njMule and on another. remotes.properties: the remote njMule you connect to, with their tokens, readable by its owner only on Linux and macOS; on Windows your own profile folder keeps it from the other users.
databackups/njmule-config-<date>-<time>.zip: the configuration backups. webview/: what the desktop window's page remembers (theme, language, the lists' columns, the screen and the words typed before) and its caches; on macOS the system keeps them in its own place instead.
tempEach download in progress as 001.part (its data, with gaps where nothing came yet) and 001.part.met (its hashes, the parts done, its priority, category and best sources), in eMule's format with a few tags of njMule's own.
cachecountries.dat: the country database, when countries are shown. update/: the packages of new versions being downloaded or waiting to be installed.
logsnjmule.log and the older ones, njmule.2026-10-15.0.log.gz and so on; remote/ for a desktop window that drives another njMule. See Logs.
incomingYour completed downloads, nothing else.

Safety copies

Most files are written in a way that survives a crash or a full disk: njMule writes name.tmp, keeps the current file as name.bak, then puts the new one in place. If a file is damaged, njMule reads its .bak instead. A list that cannot be read at all (such as cancelled.met or fileinfo.ini) is set aside as name.corrupt-<time> and started anew, so that a damaged file never stops njMule.

Leave the .bak and .tmp files alone; the configuration backups leave them out.
